In Texas, San Antonio which was apart of Mexico there was a place built in 1744 called the Alamo. Today the Alamo is the site and symbol for the battle of Texan independence. At first it was built as a Spanish mission it was less than 500 ft. away from the San Antonio river. In 1803 it turned into a military outpost. The battle happened on February 23 of 1836 and there were about 200 Texans that barricaded inside of the Alamo. Also with "Tennessee boys" on their side, led by Davy Crockett. 5,000 Mexican soldiers on the opposing side led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The battle lasted a staggering 13 days which means it ended on March 6. The day the Mexicans won was because the attacked from all sides. The Mexicans were too powerful for the Texans to beat them. Out of 200 people 2 survived while 600 Mexican soldiers were wounded or even killed. In April, 6 weeks after the Texans did a surprise attack "The Battle of San Jacinto" which ended the revolution. The saying "Remember the Alamo" was because during the attack in San Jacinto the Texans yelled the saying, that's how it started. Santa Anna was captured and the Texans forced him to order his troops out of Texas. In the 20th century the Alamo became an official Texas shrine. It symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The Alamo today is the church which is the only left. Nowadays it is the most popular tourist attraction in Texas vistited by about 4 million people every year.
