Hoover Dam, the highest concrete dam in the western hemisphere. Located on the border of Nevada and Arizona, the Black Canyon, in the Colorado River, about 30 miles from Las Vegas. It is 700 feet above the water level of the Colorado River and a length of 1,244 that's 174 feet taller than the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Total weight is 6.6 billion tons the same amount of about 18 Empire State Buildings! It was named after our 31st president, Herbert Hoover. The reservoir is one of the largest at over 500 feet deep it holds 10,000,000,000,000 (10 trillion) gallons of water, which is enough to flood the whole state of New York 1' deep. When first built they got $1 an hour, about $14.20 in today's money. 6 million tons of concrete were poured which is enough to build a highway from San Francisco to New York with it being 16 feet wide and 8 in. thick. The average temperature on a working day, a staggering 119.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Over 100 people died building the dam. September 30, 1935 the day the dam work came to an end (see what I just did there ;) ). I was less than 5 years of construction two years before planned and much under the budget yet it still cost $49,000,000 ($1,000,000,000 in today's money). There are 17 generators in the Hoover power plant all which weigh over 4 jumbo jets!! Enough to supply electricity to 100,000 houses each. 1.5 million gallons of water flow through every second enough to fill 15 backyard sized swimming pools. Around 100 million people tour the dam site each year (I did it again XD ) wow!!
