The Parthenon is in Athens, Greece and is a temple that honored Greek goddess Athena Parthenos. It was used in times of attack or to pray. The Parthenon is on a huge rock formation called the Acropolis, The Acropolis raises 400 ft. above the ground. At the Acropolis there are many other buildings on it that honors the gods. The Parthenon is 8 x 17 in pillars and 101 ft. x 228 ft., the short side being the front/back. The Parthenon was built over 2500 years ago and construction started in 447 B.C. It took more than 9 years to build, built with 30,000 tons of white marble. The Parthenon, when first built, was painted red, gold, and blue. It is built Doric style which is plain pillars with not to much complex details. Inside is what counts, it is a huge Athena statue, 40 feet tall! The original Parthenon was damaged in 1687 that is why it looks damaged today. The Parthenon is one of the most famous archeological sites in the world.
